Albania was Europe’s secret for years. Not anymore. The country is trending hard, and you will now find the same three agrotourisms in every magazine list and every “hidden Albania” blog. They are good places. They are also not hidden.
This list is different. I run InAlb, a local tour operator in Albania, based in Tirana. These are the tables where locals actually eat, the restaurants worth a detour, and the experiences that are not famous but are actual gems. They are the places where we eat, ride and swim when nobody is watching.

Where do locals actually eat near Tirana?
Restorant Reka in Bërzhitë, a short drive southeast of Tirana, has been run by the same family for more than 30 years. This is where you taste real Albanian cooking: the best lamb chops we know of in Albania, kukurec done properly, and desserts that end arguments. You will see happy locals and no tourists. So be the first tourist there, or the second. Tell them a local sent you.
No tasting menu, no concept, no story printed on the wall. Just a family that has cooked the same way for three decades because it works.

What should you order at Taverna Hibraj on Llogara?
Here is the move everyone misses. Driving from Tirana to the Riviera, the new tunnel saves you time and costs you the best meal of your trip. Skip it. Climb the Llogara Pass for 20 extra minutes and stop at Taverna Hibraj in Llogara National Park.
Order the fiorentina steak. I will say this plainly: the best meat you have ever had. Then take the mountain yogurt with mountain honey for dessert, and write to me afterwards, because I want to hear what you thought of it. This is a promise I am comfortable making in public.

Where is the real wild nature in Albania, if not Theth?
Theth is beautiful and Theth is busy. If you want wild nature that is not cover-magazine wild but actually wild, go south. The Zagoria valley, and the high country between Leskovik and Ersekë, are what the Alps were fifteen years ago: stone villages, empty trails, shepherds who wave because a car is still an event. Go, and you will remember me.
There is no infrastructure aimed at you here. That is the price and the prize. We route travelers through this region on tailor-made trips because it rewards slow travel and punishes checklists.
What is Sarandapor, and why do locals prefer it to Bënja?
Everyone knows Banjat e Bënjës, the thermal pools near Përmet. Sarandapor is the one locals kept. Warm sulphur springs on the Sarantaporos, a tributary of the Vjosa, the last wild river in Europe. Locals from Leskovik have trusted these waters for generations, and around them sit canyons, springs and serious caves.
One of those caves made world news in November 2025. Inside Sulfur Cave, in the Sarantaporos gorge on the Albania-Greece border, researchers documented the largest spiderweb ever found on Earth: 106 square meters, home to about 111,000 spiders. The web sits deep in a dark passage that only speleologists visit. The springs, the gorge and the light are yours.
What is the best active experience in hidden Albania?
Forget ATV tours and ziplines. Go to Leskovik and ask for Ana. She will put you on a local horse and ride with you to Sarandapor, to the thermal baths, the springs and the canyons. Horseback with locals, to a place with no crowds, on the edge of Europe’s last wild river. That is the most special active experience we know in Albania, and we are a company that sells experiences for a living.

Are these places touristy?
No. That is why they are on this list. Reka and Taverna Hibraj serve mostly Albanians. Zagoria and the Leskovik to Ersekë region see a fraction of the visitors Theth gets. Sarandapor is known to locals and almost absent from guidebooks.
Can InAlb organize these as a tour?
