Theth Day Trip from Tirana: Alps, Church & Blue Eye

Theth sits in a high valley in the heart of the Albanian Alps, ringed by some of the tallest peaks in the country. For most of its history the only way in was on foot or horseback, and you can still feel that remoteness today: grey stone houses with heavy slate roofs, a small white church standing alone in the meadow, and shepherds’ paths climbing straight up into the rock. This is a full day from Tirana, and a good part of the experience is the road itself.

You leave the city early and climb north into the mountains. The drive ends at the Qafe Thore pass, where the road tops out and the whole Theth valley opens up below you. It is one of the great views in Albania, and we always stop here for photos and a few minutes of mountain air before dropping down into the village.

Once in Theth, your guide walks you through the highlights at a human pace. You will see the 19th-century stone church and the Kulla e Ngujimit, the old lock-in tower where men once sheltered during blood feuds, and hear how life worked in these isolated villages. The main walk of the day is to the Blue Eye of Theth, a roughly ninety-minute round trip on forest paths beside the river to a turquoise pool fed by an icy waterfall. The water is freezing and clear to the bottom; most people dip their feet, a few brave the whole thing.

A note from our guides: we leave at 06:00 on purpose. The road is long and slow, and the early start gets us to the Blue Eye before the bigger coach groups, while the light is soft and the trail is quiet. We keep lunch relaxed, usually at a family guesthouse serving fergese, qofte and warm bread, so you eat when the group is ready rather than on a fixed clock.

Honest expectations: this is a long day and a real mountain drive, with a gentle but uphill walk at the end. It suits travellers who love big scenery and do not mind hours in the van, including families with older children, photographers and slow walkers. If you would rather not rush the road, we also run an overnight version that lets you sleep in the valley. Departures run from April to October, when the passes are clear of snow.
