Albania itinerary: 5, 7, 10 and 14 days, planned by locals

For a first Albania itinerary, we recommend at least seven days. Five days can make a lovely short break, but it is not enough for a broad tour of the country: choose one region, stay in two bases and take selected day trips. Choose the north when hiking and mountain scenery lead the wish list; choose the south for a mix of historic towns, beaches, nature and adventure. Ten days gives the south more breathing room. Fourteen days makes a north–south journey more realistic.

Choose your route before you choose your hotels

Your flight times come before the destination list. Landing late on Monday and leaving early on Friday gives you three full days on the ground, not five. The same principle matters even on a two-week trip.

The best Albania road trip is not the one with the most pins on the map. It is the one that leaves enough time to enjoy the places between the drives. A short distance can hide bends, a slow village approach, coastal traffic and another walk from the car park to the place you came to see.

Time in Albania Our recommendation What the trip actually gives you Main compromise
5 days / 4 nights One region, two bases and selected day trips A focused mountain, culture or coastal break Not a full-country introduction; flights are decisive
7 days / 6 nights Southern culture and Riviera, or a separate northern week A first regional journey with full days outside the car Choose north or south, not both
10 days / 9 nights A fuller southern loop Berat, Përmet, Gjirokastër, Butrint and coastal time The Alps stay out unless you shorten the south
14 days / 13 nights Albanian Alps, historic towns and Riviera A substantial north–south trip with several two-night stays Still a touring holiday, not two weeks of slow travel

All durations include arrival and departure. Seven nights normally means eight calendar days. These are suggested routes to personalise, not fixed departures or promises that every activity is included.

North or south: what would we choose for you?

Choose northern Albania if the holiday is mainly about walking, mountain landscapes and guesthouse stays. Shkodër is a useful gateway, but Theth deserves time in the valley. Lëpushë and the Kelmend highlands are another direction we would consider for a nature-led trip, not an extra excursion to add automatically to Theth.

Choose southern Albania if you want different kinds of days: a castle and bazaar, a countryside meal, a river experience and time beside the sea. The south also has walking routes; choosing it does not mean giving up activity. The national tourism agency’s Himarë destination guide highlights nature walks in the surrounding hills and mountains alongside the beaches and cultural sights. Select the actual walk for the season and your fitness.

Choose fewer bases if unpacking once matters more than seeing more regions. But measure the return drives before booking. One comfortable hotel is not a shortcut to all of northern Albania.

Prefer more time in fewer places? Our slow travel in Albania guide explains how we choose longer stays and leave room for local people, meals and unhurried days.

The three planners behind this guide

The itinerary advice was developed by Tea Kardhiqi, specialising in Balkan routes and logistics; Donald Leka, who has spent seven years creating trips in Albania; and Ilir Avdulli, an Albania travel planner.

Our starting questions are practical: how many usable days do you have, how much walking do you enjoy, and how much time are you willing to spend in a vehicle? We then choose the overnight bases, fit the main experiences around them and remove stops that make the day too full.

The routes below are alternatives for different travelers, not a popularity ranking. Boats, local hosts, accommodation and outdoor activities are confirmed for each trip. The final proposal specifies what is included.

1. Five-day Albania itinerary: two bases, not a race around the country

Five days is a short regional visit. Our preference is two bases and carefully chosen day trips, rather than a different hotel every night. If you can extend to seven days, we normally recommend doing so: the extra time can turn an arrival, a departure and several transfers into a more satisfying holiday.

There is no single five-day route for everyone. These two examples serve different interests and should not be combined.

Northern option: Shkodër and Theth

Best for: an active short break with one full mountain day. Bases: Shkodër and Theth. Nights: Shkodër 1 → Theth 2 → Shkodër 1. This uses two bases, with a return to the same Shkodër hotel if available.

On a small screen, swipe the table sideways to see every column.

Day Plan Sleep
1 Arrive at Tirana Airport and continue to Shkodër if your flight allows. Walk through the centre; leave extra sightseeing optional. Shkodër
2 Transfer to Theth. Settle into the guesthouse and explore the village or take a suitable short walk. Theth
3 A full walking day chosen with local advice: Grunas Waterfall, the Blue Eye route or another suitable outing. These walks have different demands. Theth
4 Return to Shkodër. Use the remaining time for the city or a nearby lakeside visit, rather than another distant mountain excursion. Shkodër
5 Transfer to the airport with a buffer appropriate to your flight and the road conditions. Departure

Theth is a destination to stay in, not simply a photo stop reached from Shkodër. Two nights create one full day when your main task is walking rather than arriving or leaving.

When we would change it: if Lëpushë is the priority, build the mountain stay around Lëpushë and the Kelmend area instead of adding it to these Theth days. If mountain conditions do not suit the planned walks, choose a different regional programme. With a very late arrival or early departure, change the overnight plan or add time; do not pretend the airport connection is a sightseeing day.

What we leave out: Valbona, the Theth–Valbona crossing, Koman/Shala and the southern Riviera. A short hiking holiday works better when it protects the hiking time.

Southern option: Berat and Vlorë

Best for: culture, food and a first taste of the sea. Bases: Berat and Vlorë. Nights: Berat 2 → Vlorë 2. This is a compact central–southern break, not a complete Riviera itinerary.

On a small screen, swipe the table sideways to see every column.

Day Plan Sleep
1 Arrive and continue to Berat when the flight leaves enough time. Enjoy the old quarters after settling in. Berat
2 Explore the castle and choose one countryside experience around Roshnik: a rural lunch, a tasting or a cooking visit, arranged in advance. Berat
3 Travel to Vlorë. A visit to Apollonia Archaeological Park can be the main stop on the way if the day’s timing allows. Vlorë
4 Choose a booked Karaburun boat outing in suitable sea conditions, or a land-based day around Vlorë and Zvërnec. Return to the same hotel. Vlorë
5 Return towards Tirana Airport. The flight must leave a comfortable margin for the complete transfer, vehicle return if relevant, and airport check-in. Departure

Vlorë keeps this short route more compact than pushing down to Sarandë and back. It also makes clear what the holiday is: one cultural base and one coastal base. It is not five days of beach time.

For the coastal day, our Albania boat tours guide explains the different departure areas and boat styles. Confirm the actual route and inclusions for your chosen outing.

When we would change it: for an early departure, stay closer to the airport the previous night and redesign the bases, or add a night. If Himarë’s beaches are the main reason for coming, give Himarë more of the trip and remove inland stops. If culture and guided day trips matter most, a Tirana-based or Tirana–Berat version may suit you better, especially if you prefer a familiar hotel. That is a travel-style choice, not our default for active travelers.

What we leave out: Gjirokastër, Butrint, Ksamil, the southern Blue Eye, Përmet and the Alps. Adding them would undo the reason for choosing two bases.

2. Seven-day Albania itinerary: southern towns and a real coastal pause

Best for: a first visit mixing culture, food, nature and the sea. Route: Tirana → Berat → Gjirokastër → southern Blue Eye → Himarë → Tirana. Nights: Tirana 1 → Berat 1 → Gjirokastër 1 → Himarë 2 → Tirana 1. Pace: active touring, with one full coastal day.

Seven days is our recommended starting point for a fuller first trip, not a claim that you can see all of Albania in a week. This route gives both historic towns their own evening and protects two consecutive nights in Himarë.

Aerial view of Porto Palermo Castle on a wooded peninsula surrounded by turquoise Ionian water
Porto Palermo on the Riviera near Himarë: a possible coastal stop, not another overnight base to add.

Day 1: Arrive in Tirana

An afternoon arrival may leave time for the centre, New Bazaar and dinner. An evening arrival may leave time only to settle in. We do not sell those as equivalent first days. Sleep: Tirana.

Day 2: Berat, with time inside the town

Travel to Berat and explore its castle and historic quarters. Choose the order around the weather, walking preferences and your arrival. One night here means making a decision: a fuller town visit or a shorter visit with a countryside meal. A castle tour, several museums, a winery and a cooking class are not all necessary for a good day. Sleep: Berat.

Day 3: Gjirokastër and its stone streets

Continue to Gjirokastër for the castle, bazaar and a historic house open to visitors. Berat and Gjirokastër share one UNESCO World Heritage inscription, but they are not interchangeable stops. Staying in each lets you experience their different streets and evenings. Gjirokastër’s slopes and cobbles also matter when choosing a hotel for someone with limited mobility. Sleep: Gjirokastër.

Day 4: The southern Blue Eye, then Himarë

Visit the Blue Eye spring before continuing towards the Riviera. This is Syri i Kaltër near Sarandë, not the Blue Eye reached on a walk in the Theth area. The visit includes the approach from the parking area, not just a few minutes beside the water. Allow for that before adding stops around Qeparo or Porto Palermo. Sleep: Himarë.

Day 5: Stay by the sea

Give this day one main purpose: a boat outing, a beach day, or a village and walking day around Old Himarë. A boat needs suitable conditions and a confirmed departure; it is not an automatic inclusion. If the sea is unsettled, a land-based plan keeps the day worthwhile. Sleep: Himarë.

Our Albanian Riviera beach guide helps compare coastal places before choosing the day’s outing. Pick somewhere that fits your overnight base rather than driving the whole coast again.

Day 6: Return to Tirana

Choose whether the journey uses the scenic Llogara Pass or the more direct tunnel route. The pass is a sightseeing choice; its stops and bends should not be timed as if you were using the tunnel. Return to Tirana for the final evening rather than combining the whole coastal transfer with a tight flight connection. Sleep: Tirana.

Day 7: Departure

Transfer to the airport. A later flight may allow a short city visit, but departure arrangements come first.

What we leave out: the Albanian Alps, Koman Lake, Përmet, Butrint and Ksamil. The purpose is to enjoy a southern introduction, not collect every famous name.

If Butrint matters more than Himarë: replace the two Himarë nights with two nights in Sarandë or Ksamil. Day 5 becomes Butrint and coastal time; Day 6 returns to Tirana. You keep six nights and change the coastal base instead of adding another hotel.

Prefer a northern week?

Use the same six-night budget differently: Shkodër 2 → Theth 3 → Tirana 1. Arrive and continue north on Day 1 when flights allow; spend Day 2 in Shkodër and its surroundings; transfer to Theth on Day 3; choose walks for Days 4 and 5; return to Tirana on Day 6; depart on Day 7. This offers two full mountain days. A Koman/Shala excursion can replace the Shkodër day if you accept a much longer outing; it does not fit in addition to it. Choose Lëpushë instead of Theth if that better matches the desired walking trip.

3. Ten-day Albania itinerary: culture, rivers and the Riviera

Best for: a more varied southern road trip. Route: Tirana → Berat → Përmet → Gjirokastër → southern Blue Eye → Sarandë → Butrint → Himarë → Tirana. Nights: Tirana 1 → Berat 2 → Përmet 1 → Gjirokastër 1 → Sarandë 1 → Himarë 2 → Tirana 1.

Ten days lets you include the Vjosa valley and the far south without removing every longer stay. It remains a touring route: two nights in Himarë create one full day there, not a long beach holiday. If swimming and rest are the priority, reduce the inland circuit and put the nights on the coast.

On a small screen, swipe the table sideways to see every column.

Day Main plan and planning decision Sleep
1 Arrive in Tirana. Keep the first outing proportional to the flight time. Tirana
2 Travel to Berat; explore Mangalem, Gorica and the riverside. Berat
3 Castle and a countryside experience around Roshnik. If Osum Canyon is the priority, make it the main excursion and adjust the town visits. Berat
4 Travel to Përmet. Choose the town, a food experience or Bënja according to the time left after the drive. Përmet
5 Choose a suitable, prearranged morning activity or continue earlier to Gjirokastër. Do not promise rafting, baths, a canyon walk and a full city tour in one day. Gjirokastër
6 Visit the southern Blue Eye and continue to Sarandë. Keep Butrint for tomorrow. Sarandë
7 Explore Butrint, then travel north along the Riviera to Himarë. This is a full sightseeing-and-transfer day. Himarë
8 A full coastal day: beach, boat or a selected village walk. Himarë
9 Return to Tirana, choosing the pass or tunnel route deliberately. Tirana
10 Airport transfer and departure. Departure
Five rafting groups wearing helmets and life jackets on blue-green river water between rocky banks
A river-activity day can add adventure to the southern route. The chosen river, operator, departure point and conditions are confirmed for your trip.

Përmet is where the southern trip can become more than towns and beaches. For an adventure-led version, ask about a locally operated Vjosa activity and give it the time it needs. River conditions, the operator’s requirements and the group’s abilities decide suitability. If that is the trip’s highlight, two nights in Përmet can be worth more than another stop elsewhere.

The Vjosa was declared a Wild River National Park in 2023, as documented by IUCN’s account of the park’s creation. Treat the river as a protected landscape, not simply an activity venue. For one possible outing, compare our Vjosa River kayak experience from Përmet; its meeting point, suitability and inclusions must fit your final route.

An exact swap: move the second Berat night to Përmet. Day 3 becomes Berat → Përmet, Day 4 is the full local activity day, and Day 5 continues to Gjirokastër. The total stays at nine nights. You gain a full Përmet day and lose the full day based in Berat.

What we leave out: Shkodër, Theth, Lëpushë, Valbona, Koman Lake and international borders.

Can ten days include the Alps and the south?

Yes, but it is a different, faster itinerary: Tirana 1 → Shkodër 1 → Theth 2 → Tirana 1 → Berat 1 → Gjirokastër 1 → Himarë 1 → Tirana 1. Those nine nights allow one full day in Theth and only a brief Riviera stay. Leave out Koman Lake, Valbona, Përmet, Butrint and a full beach day. We would choose this only for travelers who actively prefer variety over longer stays; fourteen days is the better starting point when both regions matter equally.

A bookable trip to compare: Albania in 11 Days: Culture, Coast & Food. It is a separate programme, not this suggested ten-day itinerary with one extra hotel night. Compare its actual route, format and inclusions.

4. Fourteen-day Albania itinerary: the Alps, UNESCO towns and sea

Best for: a broad first trip that gives both north and south their own time. Nights: Tirana 1 → Shkodër 2 → Theth 2 → Tirana 1 → Berat 2 → Gjirokastër 1 → Sarandë 1 → Himarë 2 → Tirana 1. Total: thirteen nights, including four two-night stays.

Two weeks makes this combination more sensible, but it is still a substantial road trip. The longer version is not permission to add every northern valley and a neighbouring country. Its value is having some complete days in the places you have travelled to reach.

Day Main plan Sleep
1 Arrive in Tirana; city time according to your flight. Tirana
2 Travel north through Krujë to Shkodër. Choose the length of the castle visit and any rural lunch together. Shkodër
3 A prearranged Koman Lake/Shala excursion with return road transfers, or a local Shkodër day if you want less travel. Shkodër
4 Transfer to Theth and settle into your guesthouse. Explore the village without adding a long arrival-day hike. Theth
5 One full mountain day, with the walk selected for your fitness and current conditions. Theth
6 Return to Tirana as a practical break before the south. Tirana
7 Travel to Berat and explore the old quarters. Berat
8 Castle and a chosen countryside or food experience; no hotel change. Berat
9 Continue to Gjirokastër for its stone streets, castle and regional cooking. Gjirokastër
10 Southern Blue Eye, then Sarandë. Sarandë
11 Butrint, then the coastal road to Himarë. Himarë
12 A full day on the Riviera, with a boat or village outing if wanted and suitable. Himarë
13 Return to Tirana, allowing for the chosen road and stops. Tirana
14 Departure. Departure

What we leave out: the Theth–Valbona crossing, Lëpushë and the Kelmend circuit, Përmet, and compulsory border crossings. Each can shape a different two-week holiday; none is a free addition to this one.

Three useful swaps: replace Theth with a Lëpushë-focused mountain stay; replace the second Berat night with Përmet; or replace the Koman excursion with a local day around Shkodër or Rragam. Each swap changes the experience and requires its own travel plan. Do not make all three by simply adding them to the table.

For another northern emphasis, compare Albania in 13 Days: Wild North, UNESCO & Coast. Read it as a separate product with its own daily programme.

5. Northern Albania logistics: the details that change the holiday

Shkodër or Rragam as a base?

Shkodër can work well for city life and selected excursions. Rragam near Shkodër is a different, rural option beside the Vau i Dejës lake area. It is not Rragam in the Valbona valley. Choose the accommodation for the particular excursions you intend to take, not just because both addresses say northern Albania.

For a touring programme around the north, our planners would prepare you for days with roughly three to four hours in the vehicle, sometimes more. That is a planning expectation for selected touring days, not a maximum or a promise that every outing fits. Local days may need much less driving; distant return trips can need more.

The tradeoff is simple: keeping one hotel saves packing, but repeating the same mountain road can cost the time you wanted for walking. If Theth or Lëpushë is the main reason for coming, a mountain stay is often the better use of the nights.

Is Valbona only accessible by ferry?

No. Valbona also has road access via Bajram Curri. The Koman–Fierzë ferry is a scenic approach, followed by a road transfer into the valley; it does not dock in Valbona. The ferry operator lists Fierzë–Valbona onward transport separately, and the Valbona access guide describes the all-road option.

The important planning point is that Valbona is not a quick extra stop. Arrange the complete journey, including the road approach, boat if selected, onward transfer and accommodation. For the Theth–Valbona hike, plan the one-way walking day, baggage and onward transport together; it is not a short walk followed by a simple drive back over the same pass.

Blue water winding through a narrow gorge between steep limestone cliffs
A northern lake excursion needs a complete transport plan. Check whether you are booking a ferry crossing or a return Shala outing.

Koman ferry or Shala excursion?

They are different bookings. A Koman–Fierzë crossing takes you across the lake; a Shala outing has its own route and return arrangements. In the fourteen-day suggestion, the intended experience is a return excursion from Shkodër, not an unplanned transfer to Valbona. Check the operator’s current routes and departures before booking. Water, weather and operating schedules can change the plan.

Road access is not trail access

Reaching Theth village does not prove that a higher mountain route is suitable. Before choosing a walk, check the precise starting point, expected duration, terrain, ascent, daylight and current conditions with a local guide or host. A village walk, the Blue Eye outing and a high pass crossing should not be described as the same activity level.

6. Plan the travel days, season and budget honestly

Count the whole day, not only the kilometres

Build each travel day from the door of one hotel to the door of the next. Include the road, breaks, parking, the approach to a sight, the visit itself, meals and check-in. Airport days also need the airline’s check-in margin and vehicle return where relevant.

On a small screen, swipe the table sideways to see every column.

Situation Our planning rule
Late arrival Keep the first evening simple; do not promise a full first sightseeing day.
Early departure Finish near the airport the previous night or redesign the last regional stay.
Mountain or coastal transfer Judge the road and the stops, not the distance alone. Bends and traffic can change the day.
Llogara Time the scenic pass separately from the tunnel route.
Fixed boat departure Work backwards from the confirmed meeting time, including the road transfer and boarding requirements.
Several requested sights Choose the essential visit first; extra stops remain optional.

Your final itinerary needs route-specific driving estimates for the chosen hotels, date and roads. Read those alongside the visits and stops: a driving estimate is not the duration of the whole travel day.

Match the season to the reason for travelling

For culture and food, we can build a trip with less dependence on sea or high-mountain conditions. For hiking, confirm the actual trails rather than choosing by a general summer label. For beaches and boats, leave flexibility for sea conditions. July and August can bring heat and busy coastal roads; cooler months can change daylight, boat services and guesthouse availability. Our best time to visit Albania guide explores the seasonal choices.

Self-drive, private driver or driver-guide?

InAlb arranges complete trips, not standalone car rental. A self-drive package can combine the vehicle, accommodation, route planning and specified guides or activities. With a private driver, someone else handles the road; local guiding must be stated separately. A driver-guide provides both roles for the agreed part of the journey. Confirm the language, accompanying days and who meets you at each stage.

Fuel, parking, tolls, driver expenses, meals, tickets and boat trips should be listed in the proposal, not assumed. For self-drive, read the vehicle and insurance terms. Our driving versus private driver guide helps with that decision.

Public transport is another way to travel, but the road-trip tables above are not bus schedules. Redesign the sequence around confirmed connections, fewer bases and separately arranged excursions.

What does a private Albania itinerary cost for two?

There is no single honest price for these suggested routes without dates, accommodation choices, transport format and agreed inclusions. A self-drive price is not a private-driver quote, and a group departure’s per-person price is not the cost of the same journey for two alone.

Ask for a total for both travelers, with the room arrangement and included services stated. Compare it with the actual programmes in our best Albania tours list and our private tour cost guide. Published package prices are starting points for those products, not quotations for this article’s routes.

Tirana, Corfu or a Balkan continuation?

The sample routes assume Tirana Airport. Starting through Corfu and the ferry to Sarandë changes the geography of a southern trip, but the flight, port transfer, ferry check-in and sailing all need to connect. Do not treat landing in Corfu as arriving in Sarandë.

Montenegro can form a continuation from the north; North Macedonia points the journey towards the southeast and Ohrid. Replace part of the Albania route or extend the trip. Do not add a border crossing to an already full itinerary simply because the neighbouring country looks close on the map.

Frequently asked questions

Is five days enough in Albania?

Enough for a focused short break, not a broad country tour. Choose one region and two bases, with selected day trips. We recommend at least seven days for a fuller first visit, and check arrival and departure times before deciding what fits.

What is the best seven-day Albania itinerary?

For culture, food, nature and the sea, our featured route is Tirana, Berat, Gjirokastër, the southern Blue Eye and two nights in Himarë, returning to Tirana before departure. For hiking, choose a separate northern week centred on Shkodër and Theth or Lëpushë.

Should I choose north or south Albania?

Choose the north when mountain scenery and hiking are the main purpose. Choose the south for a mix of historic towns, beaches, nature and adventure. Walking is possible in both; the season, fitness and specific route matter more than the label.

Can I combine Theth and the Riviera in seven days?

You can create a fast trip with both, but it is not our default recommendation for seven calendar days. Transfers take a large share of the week. Choose one region, or consider ten days with clear compromises and fourteen days for a more complete combination.

Can I see all the north from one base in Shkodër?

Shkodër is useful for selected excursions, not a shortcut to every northern destination. Some return trips create long driving days. If hiking in Theth or Lëpushë is central to the holiday, stay in the mountain area and protect time on foot.

Do I have to take a ferry to Valbona?

No. Valbona can also be reached by road via Bajram Curri. The Koman–Fierzë ferry is a scenic alternative followed by an onward road transfer, not the only way into the valley.

Does seven days mean seven nights?

No. The seven-day suggestion here has six nights and includes arrival and departure. Seven nights normally means eight calendar days. A late arrival and an early departure reduce the usable sightseeing time.

Can these Albania itineraries be personalised?

Yes. Share your dates, flight times, group details, walking preferences and the three experiences you most want. InAlb can adjust the bases, pace and travel format. Your confirmed proposal will specify the services and price.

InAlb plans this for you

Tell us your flight times and your three priorities

Start with the things you most want from Albania: a mountain walk, a meal with a local host, a historic town after the day visitors leave, or a day with nowhere to be except the sea. Then tell us what you do not want, whether that is daily packing, long drives or difficult walking.

Send your dates, arrival and departure times, number of travelers, preferred transport and three priorities. We will explain which route fits—and when another night would make it better.
