Best time to visit Albania: what each part of the year actually gives you

Search this question and you will mostly find pages telling you that May and September are lovely. That is true, and it is useless. It does not tell you that hiking in the Alps actually opens around 20 April, that mid March is the best food month of the whole year, or that February in Brezovica is one of the better weeks you can have anywhere in this region.

What follows is the year as we actually plan it. Seven windows rather than four seasons, with the awkward parts left in.

01When is the best time to visit Albania?

There are two strong windows. May to mid June gives you the best of everything: produce at its peak, sea warm enough to swim, prices still reasonable, no traffic and no waiting for a sunbed. Mid September to October matches it for nature and hiking, at lower prices again, and is the best period for a wider Balkans route.

If you want one answer, take the first one. If you want the honest answer, read the window that matches what you actually want to do.

03What is Albania like in January and February?

Quiet, cheap, and much better than its reputation. The high Alps are out, so Theth, Valbona and Lepushe are not options for hiking. What works instead is snow at Boga, skiing across the border at Brezovica in Kosovo, which is excellent for the food and the atmosphere as much as the slopes, and unhurried time in Korca, Shkodra, Berat, Gjirokastra and Kruja. Tirana is genuinely pleasant in winter.

Two things shape a good winter itinerary here. It gets dark early, so we do not plan long driving days. And the region is more interesting than Albania alone in these months, so Kolasin and Durmitor in Montenegro, and Kotor and Budva on the coast, sit naturally on the same route.

04What can you do in mid March and April?

This is the food window, and almost nobody writes about it. Everything has just started being harvested, so produce is fresh and properly in season, and the farm to table places are at their best. If you care about eating, this is the period to come.

Our regular stops in this window are Mrizi i Zanave in the north and Kazerma, both built around what the land is producing that week rather than a fixed menu. It is also strong for cultural travel, castles and old towns, before any crowds arrive.

Nature reopens during this window too. The Koman Lake ferry restarts on 1 April and runs until 30 October, which puts the northern route back in play.

05When does hiking actually start in the Albanian Alps?

Around 20 April, and it runs to about 20 October. That is roughly six weeks earlier at one end and later at the other than most guides tell you. It varies by valley, so the answer for Theth is not automatically the answer for Valbona or Lepushe.

06Why is May to mid June the strongest window?

Because you get all of it at once. Produce is still at its best, the sea is warm enough to swim, prices have not jumped, it is not too hot, and the crowds have not arrived. You can swim at any beach without waiting for a sunbed, photograph the good spots without queueing, and drive without traffic.

If your trip mixes coast, mountains, food and culture, and you have any flexibility on dates, this is the window to pick.

07What should you know about mid June to August?

Everything is possible, and this is the hardest period of the year to plan well. Long days, hiking everywhere, the whole coast open. Also traffic, peak prices, and temperatures that now reach 38 degrees. The 30 degree August is behind us.

Long drives with small children are tiring in that heat, so itineraries need shorter legs and better timing. Sunbeds go early unless you know which spots still have space. This is the season where the most can go wrong, so it needs the earliest booking and the most careful routing. If August is your only option the trip still works. It just cannot be improvised.

08Is mid September to October a good time to visit Albania?

Yes, and it is our other favourite window. Beaches, hiking and nature are all still on, prices have dropped and the crowds have gone. The weather holds well through October.

It is also the best period of the year for a wider Balkans route, because everything is open and everything is doable. 09What is November good for?

Slow travel. Not beaches. What works in November is farm visits, light hiking on selected spots, food, and time in the cities and old towns without anyone else there.

10Why visit Albania in December?

Everything January offers, plus celebration. You can still ski, and the winter routes all work, but December adds festivals, live music in small places, and local celebrations that are not put on for visitors.

Boboshtica near Korca is the one we send people to for December evenings. Valbona works as a winter base in the same period, even though the hiking trails are shut. For travellers who want to connect with somewhere real rather than watch it through a window, this is one of the best periods in the year. I cannot recommend it enough.

11What do the temperature figures actually say?

Tirana gives a fair picture of inland Albania. The coast runs hotter in summer and milder in winter.

Two things worth reading off that table. November is the wettest month of the year, not January. And the summer averages hide the peaks, because on the coast and in the south we regularly see up to 38 degrees in July and August.

12How should you choose your dates?

Work backwards from the one thing that matters most to you.

• Food. Mid March to April, or May.
• Alps and hiking. Late April to October, best in June or September.
• Sea without the crowds. May to mid June, or mid September.
• Price. January, February or November.
• Atmosphere and celebration. December.
• Multi-country Balkans. Mid September to October.

The mistake we see most is treating Albania as one climate. It is not. The coast, the interior and the mountains open and close on different schedules, and a route that works beautifully in September can be half impossible in February.
