Berat Day Trip from Tirana: UNESCO City, Castle & Old Bazaar
A full-day guided trip from Tirana to Berat, the UNESCO town of a thousand windows, with a stop at Belsh Lake, the castle, the old quarters and the Gorica Bridge. From €15 per person, hotel pickup included.
Tour Overview
Berat is one of those towns that looks almost unreal the first time you see it. White Ottoman houses stack up both banks of the Osum river, window above window, which is how it earned its old name, the town of a thousand windows. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and unlike a museum town it is still very much lived in. This is a full day from Tirana, guided by a local who was born here.
The drive south takes a little under two hours, and we break it with a short stop at Belsh, a quiet lake town surrounded by olive groves, to stretch and take a few photos before the road continues to Berat.
The heart of the day is Berat Castle. It is not a ruin behind a rope: families still live inside the walls, hanging washing between Byzantine churches and old stone houses. Your guide walks you up through the gate, explains the layers of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history, and points out the views over the valley and the red rooftops below. If you like icons, the small Onufri Museum inside the castle is worth the optional ticket for its glowing sixteenth-century painting.
Down in the town you walk the two old quarters, Mangalem on one side and Gorica on the other, linked by the stone Gorica bridge over the river. There is time for coffee, lunch and a slow look at the lanes, which is really how Berat is best understood.
A note from our guides: we do not rush Berat. The castle neighbourhood is somebody’s home, so we walk it quietly and leave time to simply sit and look out over the valley. The day is easy in spirit, but it does involve cobblestones and a gentle climb to the castle, so comfortable shoes matter more than anything else. It suits families, couples and anyone who loves old towns, and it runs beautifully in every season.

No — Belsh is not an organised swimming spot. The stop is a 30-minute photo and stretch break before continuing to Berat.
