Skanderbeg is the figure every Albanian grows up with — a 15th-century commander who broke from Ottoman service, returned to his ancestral Kruja, and held off the largest empire on earth for a quarter-century from a small mountain castle. His double-headed eagle ended up on the flag, and Kruja is where it all happened. The castle still stands on the ridge, the Skanderbeg Museum tells the story, and the Old Bazaar below has been a working Ottoman market for centuries — one of the best-preserved in the Balkans.
The day starts mid-morning with pickup from your Tirana hotel and a 45-minute drive north. A guided walk takes in the Skanderbeg Museum, the Ethnographic Museum in a 19th-century Ottoman house, the castle walls and the small tekke inside the grounds, then down into the stone-paved bazaar for rugs, silver, copper and wood carvings. Lunch is in the bazaar at a long-running family spot.
The afternoon is the mountain part: a short drive up Mount Kruja toward the cave of Sari Salltik, a 13th-century Bektashi mystic. The shrine sits at 1,176 m inside a cave, with a hexagonal shrine and his tomb, and a viewpoint that looks clear across the Adriatic plain. Back in Tirana by late afternoon — about 8 hours door-to-door at a comfortable pace.
