Tour Overview

Gjirokastra is one of Albania’s most striking towns, a stone city of Ottoman houses climbing a hillside under a big castle. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site, sometimes called the stone city for its grey roofs and steep cobbled streets. This is a full day from Tirana with a guide who knows it well.

What do you see? The castle, with its old cannons and the famous plane on display, and the views over the Drino valley. The old bazaar with its craft shops and carpets. And the traditional houses, some open as museums, that show how people lived here for centuries.

Who is it for? Families, couples and anyone who likes history and old towns. There is walking and some steep, cobbled streets, so wear good shoes, but the guide sets an easy pace. There is time for coffee, a local lunch and the spoon sweets the town is known for. Pickup from Tirana is included.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Gjirokastra called the “city of stone”?

Its Ottoman-era houses have distinctive grey stone roofs and walls and climb the hillside below the castle. The townscape earned Gjirokastra UNESCO World Heritage status as a rare, well-preserved Ottoman town.

How long is the day?

A full day — typically a 07:00 pickup in Tirana and an evening drop-off, with roughly 3 to 3.5 hours of driving each way and the rest spent in Gjirokastra.

What is at the castle?

Gjirokastra Castle is one of the largest in the Balkans. Inside is a long gallery of captured weapons, the clock tower, sweeping valley views, and a Cold War US Air Force plane displayed on the terrace.

What is the Cold War tunnel?

A large anti-nuclear bunker built beneath the castle for communist-era officials — part of the day’s 20th-century layer alongside the Ottoman architecture.

Is lunch included?

No — lunch is on your own in the Old Bazaar, where the guide can recommend good traditional spots.

How much walking is there?

A fair amount on steep cobbled streets, with some uphill to the castle. Comfortable non-slip shoes are essential; the day suits anyone with reasonable mobility.

Is it family-friendly?

Yes — there is no strict minimum age, though the cobbles and the long drive suit children who can manage both. The castle, weapons and tunnel tend to hold kids’ interest.

What language is the tour in?

English. Italian, German or Spanish may be available on request for private bookings.
