Tour Overview
Bovilla Lake sits in the mountains just north of Tirana and supplies the city with much of its water. From the lake, a path climbs Gamti Mountain to a ridge with a wide view over the turquoise water and the surrounding peaks. It is one of the easiest ways to get real mountain scenery close to the capital.
Is it hard? Not really. The hike is short and steady, with a steeper bit near the top, and most people with reasonable fitness manage it. At the viewpoint you stop for a picnic and have time to take in the view before heading back down.
Who is it for? Anyone who wants a bit of nature and a good view without a long drive or a hard climb. It suits couples, friends and families with active kids. Wear proper shoes and bring water and sunscreen. The trail is best from spring to autumn, in dry weather.

Frequently Asked Questions
How hard is the hike?
Short but steep — about 2 km each way, 45–60 minutes to the top on a rocky uphill trail. Moderate fitness is enough; you do not need to be a hiker, but you need proper walking shoes and you will be breathing hard on the climb.
Can I swim in the lake?
No — Bovilla is Tirana’s drinking-water reservoir, so swimming is not permitted. The lake is for looking at, not for swimming.
When is the best time of day?
Late afternoon — the sun lights the limestone cliffs and the turquoise water at its strongest. Morning is cooler for the climb itself if you are heat-sensitive.
When is the best season?
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) — comfortable temperatures and the lake at its strongest colour. Summer works with earlier or later slots; winter only in dry weather.
Is it suitable for children?
The minimum age is 10, and it suits children who already hike with their family. The trail is steep enough that very young or unhiked children will struggle.
How long is the full experience?
About 5–6 hours door-to-door from your Tirana hotel — roughly 3 hours of driving and 90 minutes on the trail.
Is the trail wheelchair accessible?
No — the trail is rocky and steep. Guests with mobility limitations can stay at the dam-area viewpoint, which still has a strong view of the lake without the hike.
What if it rains?
Light rain and the trip runs, with extra care on the descent. Heavy rain, snow or thunderstorms and we cancel with a full refund or rebooking — always check the forecast 24 hours ahead in winter.
