Tour Overview
From Shkodra, the road and then the water lead you into the Albanian Alps by way of Koman Lake, a long, narrow reservoir squeezed between high forested mountains. It looks and feels like a Nordic fjord, and a boat is the only way to travel through it.
What do you do? You cruise the lake and continue up the Shala River, where the water turns bright turquoise and opens into white pebble beaches. There is time to swim and relax before the boat brings you back. Much of the day is spent on the water, with big scenery the whole way.
Who is it for? Anyone who wants dramatic landscapes and a relaxed day on the water, including families. Starting from Shkodra makes for a shorter run to the lake than from Tirana. Bring a swimsuit, a towel and sunscreen. The boats run through the warmer months, when the water is best for swimming.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from the Tirana trip?
Same Koman ferry and Shala River, but from Shkodra the drive to the dam is about 1.5 hours instead of three — so a civilised start and a shorter overall day. If you are staying in the north, book this one.
How long is the day?
About 10 hours door-to-door from Shkodra (roughly an 08:00 pickup and ~18:00 return), versus around 13 hours from Tirana.
What is there at the Shala River?
A turquoise river in a limestone canyon with shallow swimming pools and a few riverbank lunch spots. The swim is the main event; an optional short uphill hike to the “Shala balcony” gives the headline photo.
Is the water cold?
Alpine cold, year-round. June–September the surface warms to about 16–20°C; spring and autumn are colder. Bring a rashguard or quick-dry layer if you feel the cold.
Is lunch included?
No — small spots at the Shala serve grilled fish, bread and water for about €10–€15, or you can bring a packed lunch.
Is it family-friendly?
Good for kids 8+ who can manage a full day out. Younger children may find the boats and the day long, but it is far more manageable than the Tirana version.
Can I combine it with Theth?
Yes — this pairs perfectly with a Shkodra base and a Theth day for a proper northern-Albania few days. Ask us and we will help sequence it.
What if the weather is bad?
Light rain and the trip runs. Heavy rain reduces ferry visibility and may cancel the Shala swim; storms cancel the day with a full refund or rebooking.
