Travel from Tirana or Durrës to Kruja, one of Albania’s most important historic towns, known for its medieval fortress, Ottoman-era bazaar and spiritual mountain sanctuary.
Your day starts with a morning pickup from your hotel or a designated meeting point in Tirana or Durrës. After meeting your local guide, you’ll drive toward Kruja, climbing into the hills where the town sits above the coastal plain.
The visit begins at Kruja Castle, a powerful symbol of Albania’s resistance against the Ottoman Empire. Inside the castle walls, you’ll explore the Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg National Museum, dedicated to Albania’s national hero Skanderbeg. Your guide will explain how Kruja became the heart of medieval Albania and why Skanderbeg still matters today helmet, sword and a lot of determination included.
From the castle, continue on foot into the cobbled streets of Kruja’s Old Bazaar. This well-preserved Ottoman marketplace is lined with small shops selling handmade rugs, silver jewelry, wood carvings and traditional souvenirs. It’s lively, colorful, and very good at convincing visitors they need “just one more” handmade item.
You’ll then have free time for lunch at a local restaurant, where you can try traditional dishes or simply relax and enjoy the slower rhythm of the town. For those interested, an optional visit to the Ethnographic Museum offers insight into daily life inside a traditional Ottoman house.
In the afternoon, the tour continues with a scenic drive up Mount Kruja to Sari Salltik Tekke, a Bektashi sanctuary set inside a cave near the mountain’s summit. The road offers wide views and on clear days you can see all the way to the Adriatic Sea. You’ll have time to explore, take photos, and enjoy a quiet moment before returning to Tirana or Durrës.
