A 13-day small-group adventure across Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro, packed with boat rides, canyons, hikes, beaches and food. Easy pace, boutique hotels and local guides throughout, with a new base most nights as you loop from the Albanian Alps to the Adriatic and back.
This is the Balkans with a bit of everything. You boat up Koman Lake and the Shala River, swim in its clear water, hike to alpine lakes around Valbona, then wander the Ottoman bazaars of Gjakova and Prizren in Kosovo. Montenegro brings the big landscapes: the primeval forest of Biogradska Gora, a zipline over the Tara Canyon, and a walk by Durmitor’s glacial Black Lake.
Then it turns to the coast. You visit the clifftop Ostrog Monastery, take a boat to Our Lady of the Rocks, ride the Kotor cable car, and reach the beaches of Budva and Ulcinj. Back in Albania you climb the giant Rana e Hedhun dune, watch pelicans on the Karavasta Lagoon, walk the Holta Canyon trails and finish in UNESCO Berat, with two stand-out food experiences along the way. You travel as a small group with boutique hotels, local guides and the logistics handled, at an easy pace for all ages.

Suitability
Is this trip right for you?
Physical level
You should be comfortable with light walking on uneven ground, old-town cobbles and a few gentle hikes (such as to Xhema Lake and around the Black Lake), plus some longer days in the vehicle on scenic mountain and coastal roads. No technical trekking is required and the pace can be adjusted.
Accessibility
Several old towns, canyons and natural sites involve cobbles, steps and uneven paths, so the trip is not step-free. Contact us to discuss specific needs.
✓ Who should book
Couples, families across generations, and groups of friends who want a bit of everything across three countries: nature, culture, history, soft adventure, beaches and food, with the logistics handled.
✕ Who should not book
This trip may not suit you if you need step-free access, if you want one hotel for the whole trip rather than a new base most nights, or if you want either a pure beach holiday or a hard trekking expedition. It is a varied soft-adventure tour at an easy pace.
Day by day
Your 13-day itinerary
Kruja and Shkodra: Legends of the North
Kruja, Sari Salltik, Shkodra

On arrival you head straight into Albanian history at the medieval town of Kruja, where a local guide walks you through the old bazaar, famous for silverwork and crafts, and the Skanderbeg Museum inside the fortress. A scenic mountain drive reaches the Bektashi sanctuary of Sari Salltik, with panoramic views over the Adriatic, before continuing north to Shkodra, the cultural centre of northern Albania.
Koman Lake, Shala River and Valbona Valley
Koman Lake, Shala River, Valbona

An early start brings you to Koman Lake, where you board a boat and travel through narrow gorges and emerald water that feels like a hidden fjord. You stop at the Shala River, with its clear water and white gravel banks, with time to swim, then continue by boat and road to the Valbona Valley under its alpine peaks. A gentle afternoon walk reaches the small blue Xhema Lake.
Heritage in Gjakova and Prizren
Gjakova, Prizren

Cross into Kosovo to explore two Ottoman-era cities. In Gjakova you walk the Grand Bazaar (Çarshia e Madhe), the oldest in Kosovo, see the Hadum Mosque and watch artisans at work. In the afternoon you reach Prizren, the cultural heart of the country, walking its cobbled streets, crossing the old Stone Bridge and visiting the Sinan Pasha Mosque against a backdrop of hills.
Contrasts of Pristina and the Accursed Mountains
Pristina, Peja, Rugova Canyon

A short guided visit in Pristina introduces the city’s recent history, including the brutalist National Library and the NEWBORN monument. You then head west to Peja as the land turns mountainous, exploring the entrance of the Rugova Canyon in Prokletije (Accursed Mountains) National Park, one of Europe’s deepest. The day ends at the UNESCO-listed Patriarchate of Peć.
Primeval Forests and Crossing into Montenegro
Kulla Pass, Biogradska Gora, Kolasin

Cross into Montenegro over the scenic Kulla Pass into greener country and Biogradska Gora National Park, home to one of Europe’s last primeval rainforests. You take a calm walk around Biograd Lake, whose still water reflects the forest, then continue to the cosy mountain town of Kolasin for the night.
Tara Canyon and Durmitor’s Black Lake
Tara Canyon, Đurđevića Tara Bridge, Durmitor

A day for Montenegro’s most spectacular landscapes. You start at the Tara River Canyon, the deepest in Europe, stopping at the Đurđevića Tara Bridge for the view down to the river, with an optional and very safe zipline across the canyon for those wanting a thrill. You continue into Durmitor National Park (UNESCO) and walk around the glacial Black Lake (Crno Jezero).
Ostrog Monastery and Kotor Bay
Ostrog Monastery, Kotor

A scenic descent toward the Adriatic stops at Ostrog Monastery, one of the Balkans’ most important pilgrimage sites, dramatically carved into a vertical cliff. Continuing south, the peaks give way to the coast and you reach Kotor Bay, often called Europe’s southernmost fjord, where mountains rise straight from the water. The evening is free.
Venetian Kotor and Our Lady of the Rocks
Kotor, Perast, Our Lady of the Rocks, Budva

A guided walk through Kotor’s UNESCO old town takes in narrow stone streets, hidden squares and the fortifications, and the city’s famous cats. You can ride the Kotor–Lovćen cable car for views over the bay. In the afternoon you drive to elegant Perast and take a short boat to Our Lady of the Rocks, the only artificial island in the Adriatic, then continue to Budva for the night.
Adriatic Coast, Budva and the Pirate Town of Ulcinj
Budva, Sveti Stefan, Bar, Ulcinj

You start in Budva’s walled old town above the sea, with views to the iconic island of Sveti Stefan. Driving south past resorts and olive groves, you stop in Bar to see the Stara Maslina, a millennial olive tree thought to be over 2,000 years old. In the afternoon you reach Ulcinj, a town shaped by trade and piracy, and explore its old town and fortress where Cervantes is said to have been held.
Adriatic Coast and Sunset in Durres
Shengjin, Rana e Hedhun, Durres

Returning to Albania on a scenic coastal route rather than the highway, you stop near Shengjin at Rana e Hedhun, a rare natural phenomenon where a giant sand dune spills from the mountain straight to the sea. There is time to climb the dunes and enjoy the soft sand before continuing to Durres for a coastal evening.
Lagoons, Wildlife and Berat
Divjake-Karavasta Lagoon, Berat

A day for Albania’s coastal nature. From Durres you travel to the Divjake-Karavasta Lagoon, a protected area of pine forest and wetland, for birdwatching with a chance to see rare Dalmatian pelicans and, with luck, flamingos. The lagoon’s steady winds make it popular for windsurfing and kitesurfing if you want something more active. In the late afternoon you reach the UNESCO city of Berat for sunset.
Hidden Holta Canyon and Road to Tirana
Holta Canyon, Tirana

You set out for one of central Albania’s best-kept secrets, the Holta Canyon, carved by clear mountain water through quiet forest. The day is spent on gentle walks along its narrow gorges, stone bridges and riverside trails, an ideal off-the-beaten-path stop for nature lovers, before continuing on scenic roads to Albania’s capital, Tirana.
Farewell and Final Moments in the Balkans
Tirana

Your last day is flexible. Depending on your flight, you have time to explore Tirana, a capital shaped by history and creative energy, or take a relaxed day trip to a rural farm near the city for a final taste of Albanian hospitality. The trip ends in Tirana.
