Take a day trip from Tirana to Gjirokastra Stone City, exploring its history, landmarks, and authentic Albanian culture.

Trip Details

Our incredible day starts with a comfortable departure from Tirana as we head to Gjirokastra Stone City. We’ll leave the capital’s lively streets behind as we drive south. The journey itself is beautiful, with rolling hills, green valleys, and charming Albanian villages setting the scene for our adventure in Gjirokaster.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy the scenic drive through southern Albania, passing picturesque villages, rolling hills, and lush green valleys. This journey not only sets the stage for the day ahead but also offers a glimpse into the country’s charming rural life, giving you a sense of the landscapes and communities that surround Gjirokastra Stone City.

Discovering Gjirokastra Stone City

Once we arrive in Gjirokaster, our first stop is the impressive Gjirokaster Castle. This strong fortress sits high above the city, offering breathtaking views of the “Stone City” and the valley below. As you explore its ancient walls you’ll feel the weight of history all around you. Inside the castle, you’ll also find the fascinating Arms Museum. It has a compelling collection of weapons from both World War I and World War II, giving you a unique look at the region’s military past.

Exploring the Historic Bazaar & Authentic Lunch

Next, we’ll dive into the vibrant heart of Gjirokaster: its Historic Bazaar. This lively market features charming cobblestone streets and many artisan shops. You can discover beautifully handcrafted carpets, unique wooden crafts, and special souvenirs here. It’s a perfect place to see traditional craftsmanship and perhaps find a keepsake from your trip. After exploring the bazaar, we’ll enjoy an authentic Albanian lunch. We’ll savor fresh, organic dishes made with local ingredients at a welcoming traditional restaurant. Be sure to try the famous Gjirokastrian meatballs, fresh vegetable dishes and the sweet “gliko” dessert.

A Glimpse into Albanian Culture

Our cultural journey continues with visits to two more unique sites. First we’ll see the Ethnographic Museum, housed inside a beautifully preserved traditional Gjirokastrian home. This museum provides a look into everyday Albanian life from years past, showcasing clothing, household items and furniture that highlight the region’s rich cultural heritage. Nearby we’ll visit the iconic Skenduli House. Known for its remarkable architecture, this house tells the story of Albanian nobility through the centuries. Each room offers insights into the lifestyle and traditions of Gjirokastër’s past elite.

Free Time & Return to Tirana

After these captivating tours, you’ll have some free time to relax. You can do some last-minute souvenir shopping or explore more of Gjirokaster at your own pace. Your expert guide will be available to offer more recommendations if you’re interested. As evening approaches, we’ll begin our comfortable return journey to Tirana. This brings an end to a day rich with discovery and cultural immersion. The tour covers a lot in one day. The castle and Skenduli House were my favorites. Some minor delays, but nothing major.
