Hands-On Local Cheese Tasting in Lazarat
Step into the rich pastoral and culinary traditions of Lazarat with this unique and immersive Local Cheese Tasting experience hosted by Jaco and his family, who have been shepherding for generations. Enjoy a warm, personal introduction to the history of local cheese, from its traditional preparation to the tasting of authentic artisanal dishes.
Start your visit inside the family’s cheese house and small museum, where traditional tools and objects used by shepherds across generations are on display. Then, savor seven different dishes made from fresh local dairy products, kackavalli, yellow cheese melted over fire, yogurt-based sauces and homemade butter, paired with grilled bread, seasonal vegetables and local beverages such as raki or fresh fruit juice. Each tasting is explained in detail, giving you insight into the recipes, ingredients and traditional preparation methods.
The experience is further enriched by local polyphonic music, performed by the family or the renowned Lazarat men’s polyphonic group. Guests are invited to learn the iso and explore the cultural connection between polyphonic singing and cheese-making.
The visit concludes at the family shop, where you can purchase artisanal dairy products, local drinks and traditional creams. Set in a warm, intimate environment with panoramic views of the Drinos Valley, this experience offers a rare and authentic window into the culture, flavors and traditions of one of Albania’s most storied villages. Perfect for small groups seeking a hands-on, cultural and culinary adventure.
