Language Albanian is the official language. English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and all major tourist destinations on this route. At every stop you will have a local licensed guide who speaks English. Guides in other languages — French, Spanish, German, and Italian — are available on request. If you need a full-time driver-guide in a specific language, see the driver-guide option below.
Currency Albania uses the Albanian Lek (ALL). Euros are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and tourist sites, but having some Lek is useful for markets and smaller stops. ATMs are widely available in all cities on this route. Fuel is paid separately and not included in the tour price — budget approximately €80–120 for fuel over 11 days depending on your driving pace.
Driving in Albania Albania has improved its road infrastructure significantly in recent years. The main highways and coastal roads on this itinerary are well-maintained and pleasant to drive. Some secondary roads to viewpoints or smaller villages may be narrower or rougher — your ecological rental car is fully suited to all roads on this route. Driving is on the right. An international driving licence is not required for EU licence holders but is recommended for non-EU travellers. Traffic in Tirana city centre can be busy — your guide notes will help you navigate.
Getting There Fly into Tirana International Airport (TIA — Nënë Tereza). Direct flights operate from most major European cities. Your ecological rental car will be ready for collection at or near the airport on Day 1, and your private airport pickup on the first day handles the transfer to your hotel before you collect the car.
This tour is genuinely enjoyable year-round with some seasonal adjustments:
Albania is a safe and welcoming country. No vaccinations are required for EU/UK/US travellers. Tap water is not recommended for drinking — bottled water is cheap and widely available.
For travellers with physical limitations, this tour is one of our most adaptable. Every itinerary can be adjusted — shorter site visits, ground floor or lift-accessible rooms, easier walking alternatives at every destination. Simply inform us at booking and we will make sure every hotel, every activity, and every experience is fully accessible and comfortable for you. No one should miss Albania because of mobility concerns — we have solutions for every situation.
Tipping Tipping is appreciated. A general guide: round up restaurant bills or leave 5–10%. Local guides typically receive a tip at the end of each guided visit if you feel the experience was excellent — entirely at your discretion.
What is the Albania Culture & Gastronomy Tour? This is an 11-day self-drive journey through Albania’s most historically rich and culinarily exciting destinations. It is designed for travellers who want to experience Albania deeply — not just see it. Over 11 days you will explore ancient Illyrian ruins, Ottoman-era cities, UNESCO-listed old towns, medieval castles, and hidden coastal villages, while enjoying six unique gastronomic experiences, wine tastings, farm-to-table feasts, traditional music performances, and meaningful encounters with local communities. The itinerary covers the full length of Albania — from Shkodra in the north to Saranda and Ksamil in the south — ending back in Tirana.
Who is this tour designed for? This tour is particularly popular with couples, families, and small groups of friends who love history, food, and authentic cultural experiences. It suits travellers who want to move at a relaxed but enriching pace — exploring a castle or ancient site in the morning, enjoying a long gastronomic lunch, and arriving at a beautiful coastal or city hotel in time for a sunset walk. It is not a rushing tour — it is a savouring tour.
What makes this different from a standard sightseeing tour? Most tours show you the surface of a country. This one goes deeper. You will not just visit Berat — you will understand it through its art, its architecture, and its food. You will not just drive the Riviera — you will stop at a hilltop shrine, swim in a hidden cove, and eat the day’s catch at a family restaurant. The six gastronomic experiences embedded throughout the tour are not restaurants — they are genuine encounters with Albanian food culture, from farm-to-table lunches in agritourism settings to wine tastings at family vineyards. No two experiences are the same, and every one of them will stay with you.
Is this tour fully customisable? Yes — completely. This tour is one of InAlb’s most flexible offerings. The base itinerary is a carefully curated 11-day route, but every element can be adjusted to match your interests, pace, physical level, dietary needs, language preference, and travel style. Want to spend an extra day in Saranda? Done. Prefer a longer lunch and a shorter castle visit? Easy. Have mobility limitations and need ground-floor rooms and shorter walking routes? Handled before you arrive. Contact your InAlb travel specialist and we will build the version of this tour that is perfect for you.
Can this tour be done at any time of year? Yes — with some seasonal adjustments. The beach days in the south are naturally better in the warmer months (May to October), but the cultural, gastronomic, and heritage elements of this tour are excellent year-round. In winter you will have UNESCO sites almost entirely to yourself, prices are lower, and the Albanian countryside has a quiet, authentic atmosphere that summer visitors rarely see. We will advise on the best adjustments for your chosen travel dates. Just contact us and we will plan accordingly.
What does self-drive mean and how does it work? Instead of travelling in a group bus or minivan, you drive yourself in your own fully insured ecological rental car — a modern, comfortable, and fuel-efficient vehicle provided by InAlb as part of the tour. This gives you total flexibility — stop when you want, linger longer at a viewpoint, take a detour to a hidden beach. At each destination, a local licensed guide meets you for the tours and experiences, so you always have expert local knowledge without being tied to a group schedule.
What car is provided? We provide a new, ecological (low-emission) rental car that is fully insured with Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Super CDW — meaning no deposit is required and you are fully covered. The car is comfortable, well-maintained, and suitable for all roads on this itinerary including the coastal roads and mountain passes. We will confirm the specific model based on availability and group size when you book.
Do I need driving experience or an international licence? Standard driving experience is sufficient — this is not an off-road adventure. EU driving licence holders do not require an additional international licence. Non-EU travellers (UK, US, Australian, etc.) should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence, which is available from most motoring associations in your home country.
What if I prefer not to drive? If you would prefer a full-time driver-guide who travels with you throughout the 11 days, this can be arranged. The cost depends on the season and the language of the guide required — English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian-speaking driver-guides are all available. As a general guide, expect to add approximately €1,000 per person for a full-time driver-guide service. Contact us to discuss the exact cost for your dates and language preference.
Are fuel costs included? No — fuel is not included in the tour price and is paid by you directly at petrol stations along the route. Albania has a well-developed network of petrol stations. Budget approximately €80–120 for the full 11 days depending on your pace and any detours.
Will we have a guide throughout the tour? On the self-drive version, you will have local licensed guides waiting for you at each major destination — Tirana, Kruja, Shkodra, Berat, Gjirokaster, Saranda, and others. These are specialist local guides who know their city and its history intimately. For the gastronomic experiences, you will have dedicated hosts or instructors — a sommelier for wine tasting, a farm host for agritourism lunches, a cooking instructor for food workshops. You are never alone, but you also have the freedom of driving yourself between stops.
What are the 6 gastronomic experiences? The six gastronomic experiences are carefully selected to give you a genuine taste of Albanian food culture — not tourist-facing restaurants, but real encounters with the people and traditions behind Albanian cuisine. Each one is unique and located at a different point along the route, so your culinary journey evolves as the landscape does. We do not list them in full detail here because part of the magic is the discovery — but we can promise that every single one will be memorable. Contact your InAlb travel specialist for more details and to discuss any dietary requirements in advance.
What is the Albanian Night show? The Albanian Night is an interactive cultural dinner show on Day 1 in Tirana. You will be dressed in traditional Albanian attire and enjoy an 8-course feast accompanied by live traditional music, dance performances, and an entertaining introduction to Albanian customs and hospitality. It is joyful, immersive, and a wonderful way to begin the journey. Note that the evening performance on Day 7 in Saranda is a different experience — a more intimate show of local songs and polyphonic music, which is its own UNESCO-recognised art form. The two shows are entirely different and both are worth experiencing.
What is polyphonic singing? Albanian polyphonic singing is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage — one of the rarest and most distinctive musical traditions in Europe. It involves multiple voices singing in interlocking harmonies that feel simultaneously ancient and deeply moving. You will encounter it on this tour in one of the most authentic settings possible. Many guests describe it as one of the most powerful cultural experiences of their lives.
What are the hotels like? All accommodation on this tour is in carefully selected 4-star boutique hotels — chosen for their location, comfort, character, and quality. We prioritise hotels that reflect the character of each destination rather than generic international chains. In coastal areas you can expect sea-view rooms or rooms within easy walking distance of the beach. In UNESCO cities you will stay within or near the historic centres. Every property on this route has been personally vetted by InAlb.
What about accessibility? For guests with physical limitations, we ensure all hotels on your specific booking have lift access or easily accessible ground-floor rooms. We handle this before you arrive — you simply inform us at the time of booking and we take care of every detail. The same applies to restaurant access, site visit pacing, and any other mobility considerations. This tour is genuinely accessible — we want every traveller to experience Albania regardless of physical limitations.
Is there a single supplement? The base price is calculated for double occupancy (two people sharing). If you are travelling solo and wish to have a private room throughout, a single supplement applies. Please contact us for the exact figure based on your travel dates.
What is the price and what is included? The base price is €1,750 per person based on two people travelling together (double occupancy) on the self-drive option. This includes:
Not included: international flights, personal expenses, travel insurance, fuel costs, and optional activities not listed in the itinerary. Full-time driver-guide available as an add-on from approximately €1,000 per person depending on season and language.
Can more than two people join this tour? Yes — the base price is calculated per person based on double occupancy, but this tour can be booked for any number of travellers — a family of four, a group of friends, a multigenerational trip. The car size, accommodation configuration, and itinerary will be adjusted accordingly. Contact us with your group size and we will provide a tailored quote.
How do I book and can the itinerary be changed? Contact your InAlb travel specialist to start the conversation. We will discuss your travel dates, group size, language preferences, any physical requirements, dietary needs, and any elements of the itinerary you would like to adjust. From there we build your version of this tour and provide a full personalised proposal. This is not a click-and-book tour — it is a conversation that results in exactly the holiday you want.
What is the cancellation policy? Please refer to our full cancellation policy on the Terms and Conditions page. We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance before booking to cover cancellations, medical emergencies, and travel disruptions.
