Frequently Asked Questions

Traveller Info — What to Know Before You Go

Countries Covered This tour passes through three countries — Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro. Each has its own character, landscape, and culture, and together they offer one of the most diverse and rewarding road trips in Europe. You will experience Ottoman bazaars, alpine national parks, Adriatic coastlines, UNESCO heritage sites, primeval forests, and some of the continent’s most spectacular natural wonders — all in 13 days at a comfortable, unhurried pace.

Visas Travellers from the EU, USA, UK, and Australia do not need a visa for Albania, Kosovo, or Montenegro — entry is straightforward with just a valid passport. If you are travelling on a different passport, please contact us before booking and we will check the exact entry requirements for your nationality and advise accordingly.

Currency Euros are used or widely accepted across all three countries. Kosovo and Montenegro use the Euro as their official currency. In Albania the official currency is the Albanian Lek, but Euros are accepted everywhere on this route. You can travel the entire 13 days using Euros without needing to exchange currency at any point. Carry some small notes for markets, tips, and minor purchases.

Language Albanian is spoken in Albania and Kosovo. Montenegrin is spoken in Montenegro. English is widely understood in hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas across all three countries. Your local guides at each destination speak English, and all travel documents, maps, and route notes provided by InAlb are in English.

SIM Card & Connectivity You will need a SIM card that works across all three countries. We include recommended links for the best cross-border SIM options in your pre-departure travel document pack. Our team is happy to assist you choose and set up the right option before you travel. Good mobile data is important for navigation and staying in contact with our 24/7 support team throughout the trip.

Driving Information All three countries drive on the right. Roads throughout this itinerary are comfortable and well-maintained. Kosovo’s main roads are in excellent condition. Montenegro’s coastal and mountain roads are scenic and very manageable. The average daily driving time on this tour is approximately 2 hours — some days slightly less, some days a little more, but no day involves tiring long drives. Driving is genuinely part of the experience on this tour rather than something to endure.

You do not need an international driving licence. EU, UK, US, and Australian licences are all fully accepted in Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro. Every car comes with a built-in navigator so finding your way is easy, and all route notes, maps, and destination guides are provided in your travel document pack before departure.

Border Crossings Crossing between Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro is smooth and takes approximately 10 minutes at each border. You show your passport and the car documents provided by InAlb — there are no complicated procedures. Our team fully briefs you on exactly what to expect at each crossing before you depart.

Cross-Border Car Insurance Your ecological rental car is fully insured with CDW and Super CDW — no deposit and no excess costs. To drive legally across all three countries you need a Green Card insurance extension, which costs approximately €15 for two weeks and covers Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro together. You can purchase this easily at any border crossing, online in advance, or InAlb can arrange it for you as part of your pre-departure package — just let us know.

What to Pack
  • Comfortable walking shoes for site visits and easy walks
  • Swimwear — the Shala River, Adriatic beaches, and lagoon stops all invite a swim
  • A light rain jacket — mountain areas in Kosovo and Montenegro can have brief showers
  • Layers for cooler evenings, especially in the mountain sections (Days 4–6)
  • Sun protection for the coastal days
  • A small daypack for daily excursions
  • Cash in Euros for fuel, personal expenses, and optional activities
  • Power adapter — all three countries use Type C/F European plugs (220V)

Weather & Best Months This tour runs from April to October. The best overall months are May, June, and September — comfortable temperatures throughout, green mountain landscapes, warm enough for swimming, and smaller crowds at popular sites like Kotor and Budva. July and August are excellent for beach days but the Montenegrin coast gets busy. April and October offer peaceful travel, beautiful light, and very few tourists.

Health & Safety All three countries are safe for tourists. Kosovo is welcoming, peaceful, and rarely visited by tourists — which makes it one of the most authentic and rewarding stops on the entire route. Montenegro is a well-established tourist destination with an excellent safety record. Albania has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe. Our 24/7 local support team means you are never without assistance wherever you are on the route.

Tipping Tipping is appreciated across all three countries. A general guide: round up restaurant bills or leave 5–10%. Local guides typically receive a tip at the end of each guided visit if you feel the experience was outstanding — entirely at your discretion.

About the Tour

What is the Through the Balkans tour? This is a 13-day self-drive road trip through Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro — three of the most diverse and rewarding countries in the Balkans. The route takes you from Albania’s jade-green mountain lakes and alpine valleys, across Kosovo’s Ottoman heritage cities, into Montenegro’s primeval forests and Europe’s deepest canyon, along the spectacular Adriatic coast of Kotor and Budva, and back through Albania’s lagoons, canyons, and UNESCO cities. It is carefully paced, easy in difficulty, and designed to give you a complete Balkan experience — nature, culture, history, gastronomy, and coast all in one seamless journey.

Who is this tour for? This tour is ideal for families with children aged 6 and above, couples, groups of friends, and anyone who wants a rich and varied Balkan experience without demanding physical activity. The difficulty level is easy — the most physically demanding optional activity is white-water rafting on the Tara River, and even that is optional. Everything else involves light walks, boat rides, cultural visits, and enjoyable scenic drives. It is particularly well-suited to multi-generational groups who want something for everyone.

Is this tour suitable for children? Yes — families with children aged 6 and above will enjoy this tour very much. The mix of boat rides, sand dunes, wildlife spotting at the lagoon, medieval castles, ancient ruins, and mountain scenery holds children’s interest naturally throughout. Driving days average just 2 hours, which keeps younger travellers comfortable. We do not recommend this tour for infants, babies, or children under 6, as the pace and variety of experiences are better suited to older children.

What is the difficulty level? Easy. This is not a hiking tour — the physical activity is light throughout. The longest walk on any day is approximately 2 hours of easy, flat or gently undulating walking. There are no steep mountain climbs, no technical terrain, and no demanding fitness requirements. The Tara River rafting is the most adventurous activity on the tour, but it is entirely optional. If anyone in your group has physical limitations, we will adjust the itinerary and ensure all accommodation is easily accessible — just inform us at booking.

Can we skip Kosovo if we prefer? Yes — absolutely. If you would prefer to spend more time in Albania or Montenegro instead, we will adjust the itinerary accordingly. The tour is fully customisable and we can add or remove destinations, extend stays in places you love, and build the version that suits your group best. Just contact your InAlb travel specialist and we will redesign the route around your preferences.

Can we add or remove days anywhere on the route? Yes — the 13-day itinerary is a carefully designed base, but every element is flexible. Want an extra night in Kotor? Done. Prefer to skip Pristina and spend more time on the coast? Easy. Want to add a day trip from Budva? We will arrange it. Contact us before booking and we will build your personalised version.

The Self-Drive Experience

How does the self-drive work? You drive yourself in your own fully insured ecological rental car — a modern, comfortable, and fuel-efficient vehicle included in the tour price. Every morning you set off at your own pace following the route provided in your travel document pack. At each major destination, a local licensed guide meets you for tours and experiences. Between destinations, you are free to stop, explore, take photos, and enjoy the journey at your own pace. Our 24/7 support team is always reachable by phone or message if you need anything.

What car is provided and is a deposit required? We provide a new, ecological (low-emission) rental car that is fully insured with Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Super CDW. No deposit is required and there are no excess costs — everything is included in the tour price. Every car comes with a built-in navigator. The specific model is confirmed based on your group size and availability at time of booking.

Is the car insured across all three countries? Yes — with the addition of a Green Card insurance extension which costs approximately €15 for two weeks and covers Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro. This can be purchased at any border, online in advance, or InAlb can arrange it for you. Your base rental car insurance is fully comprehensive within Albania. The Green Card extension is the only additional step needed for cross-border travel and it is simple and inexpensive.

Do I need an international driving licence? No. EU, UK, US, and Australian driving licences are accepted in all three countries without any additional documentation. All car papers and cross-border documentation are provided by InAlb before departure.

What if the car breaks down? Call or message us and we will arrange a replacement vehicle as quickly as possible. Our 24/7 local support team operates across all three countries throughout your trip. You will never be stranded — we handle everything.

What if I have never done a self-drive holiday before? This tour is perfectly suited to first-time self-drive travellers. The route is straightforward, every car has a built-in navigator, average daily driving is just 2 hours, roads are in good condition throughout, and our team is available 24/7 for any question — from navigation to restaurant recommendations to last-minute changes. Many guests on this tour are doing their first ever road trip and find it far easier and more enjoyable than they expected.

What does the 24/7 support actually include? Everything. Our local support team is reachable by phone and WhatsApp throughout your entire trip and can help with navigation questions, restaurant and activity reservations, unexpected changes to your plans, medical or emergency situations, car issues, hotel adjustments, or simply a good recommendation for dinner. You are never on your own — think of us as a knowledgeable local friend available any time you need us.

Driver-Guide Option

What if I prefer not to drive? If you would rather have a dedicated driver-guide travel with you throughout the full 13 days, this can be arranged. The full driver-guide package costs approximately €3,500 total for up to 4 people — and this price includes fuel, parking fees, and all vehicle-related costs, making it a genuinely all-in solution. For groups of more than 4 people, a second vehicle would be used and the cost may increase slightly. Driver-guides are available in English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian — please specify your language preference when enquiring.

Activities & Highlights

What are the 5 gastronomic experiences on this tour? The gastronomic experiences are genuine encounters with Balkan and Albanian food culture — not tourist restaurants. Highlights include an extraordinary tasting of 20 local products and a unique meal at a secret military base repurposed as a dining experience. Each experience is different, located at a different point on the route, and deliberately kept as a discovery. We can share more details when you contact us — what we can promise is that every one of them will be memorable and unlike anything you have experienced before.

Is there a zipline on this tour? No — this tour does not include a zipline. The Tara Canyon section of the tour includes an optional white-water rafting experience for those seeking a bit of extra adventure. This is arranged with local professional instructors and is entirely optional — guests who prefer not to raft will enjoy the canyon scenery from the famous Đurđevića Tara Bridge instead.

How long are the walks on this tour? All walks on this tour are easy and accessible. The longest walk on any single day is approximately 2 hours of light, gentle walking. There are no steep mountain climbs, no technical sections, and no demanding fitness requirements. Walks include strolling through historic bazaars and old towns, gentle paths around glacial lakes, easy nature walks in national parks, and leisurely beach walks. Anyone with a reasonable level of mobility can enjoy every day of this tour comfortably.

Can non-swimmers join the boat days? Yes — the boat days on Koman Lake, the Shala River stop, and the boat to Our Lady of the Rocks in Perast are all relaxed and safe experiences suitable for non-swimmers. Swimming is always optional, never required.

What do children enjoy most on this tour? From experience, children particularly love the Shala River swimming stop, the Rana e Hedhun sand dunes (climbing them is genuinely fun for all ages), the boat ride on Koman Lake, spotting pelicans and flamingos at the Divjaka-Karavasta Lagoon, exploring the cats of Kotor old town, and the dramatic views from Ostrog Monastery. The variety of experiences on this tour means there is always something new and engaging for younger travellers.

Safety & Practicalities

Is Kosovo safe for tourists? Yes — Kosovo is a very safe destination for tourists. Violent crime against visitors is extremely rare. The local population is warm, hospitable, and genuinely welcoming to foreign visitors. Kosovo is also one of the most authentic and least commercialised stops on this tour — you are visiting a place that most tourists simply do not reach, which makes it one of the highlights for many guests.

Is Montenegro safe? Yes — Montenegro is a well-established tourist destination and one of the safest countries in the Balkans. The Adriatic coast, Kotor Bay, and the national parks are all popular with European visitors and very safe.

Do I need to exchange currency? No. Euros are accepted everywhere on this route — in Albania, Kosovo (official currency), and Montenegro (official currency). You can travel the entire 13 days without exchanging money. Having some small Euro notes is useful for markets, smaller cafes, and tips.

Are there ATMs along the route? Yes — ATMs are available in all cities and most towns on this itinerary. We recommend withdrawing cash before heading into very remote areas such as the Biogradska Gora National Park section, as facilities there are limited.
